Takashi Murakami’s new Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago show “The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg'” changed how I view the artist and his work. Unlike his show at Gagosian, his show in Chicago was not surrounded by Hypebeasts, bloggers and the Instagram generation who just attended his show to prove to their social media followers that they were there. The attendees at the Chicago show varied in ages and ethnicity, many of them were discovering Murakami’s work for the first time. Experiencing the show surrounded by those visiting MCA was great! Unlike those at the Gagosian show, those at MCA were focused on understanding the art, the artist and actually enjoying the art in person, not through their Instagram accounts later on.
